Takahiro Matsumoto (松本孝弘) is a renowned Japanese guitarist, composer, arranger, and music producer, best known as the guitarist and main composer for the rock duo B'z. He also performs under the name "TAK MATSUMOTO" and has achieved international acclaim through various solo projects and collaborations. His musical achievements include winning the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album for his collaboration with Larry Carlton on "TAKE YOUR PICK."

Career

Early Career

Matsumoto was first inspired to play guitar at the age of 13 after being captivated by Eric Clapton's playing. At 15, influenced by Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore, he purchased his first guitar, a Japanese Gibson Les Paul. Over the years, he expanded his musical horizons through session work with various artists.

In May 1988, Matsumoto released his debut solo album "Thousand Wave," marking his official entrance into the music scene. In September of the same year, he formed B'z with Koshi Inaba and released their first single, quickly gaining widespread popularity.

With B'z

B'z has become one of the most successful music acts in Japan, with Matsumoto's unique blend of blues, classical, and jazz influences creating a distinctive musical style. In 1999, he became the first Asian artist to receive a signature model from Gibson Les Paul.

Solo Projects and Collaborations

Alongside his work with B'z, Matsumoto has pursued various solo projects. In 2004, he formed the Tak Matsumoto Group (TMG) with Eric Martin and Jack Blades, releasing an album. His collaboration with Larry Carlton in 2010 earned him a Grammy Award.

In 2023, Matsumoto announced the reformation of TMG, with plans for a new album and a nationwide tour across Japan.
