Morning Musume

Overview

Morning Musume (モーニング娘。), officially styled with the year, as in Morning Musume '26, is a Japanese girl group under Up-Front Promotion and the flagship act of Hello! Project. Produced by singer-songwriter Tsunku (of Sharam Q), who wrote nearly all of its songs and composed the majority through 2014, the group is nicknamed "Mo-musu." Since January 1, 2014, its name changes every January 1 to include the last two digits of the year.

Morning Musume was the first Japanese idol group to successfully adopt a generational-turnover system, in which members "graduate" and new members join through auditions, each intake called a "generation." It is credited with reviving Japan's idol industry in the late 1990s. Every single since its January 1998 major debut has reached the Oricon weekly top 10, and all but three reached the top 5. The group appeared on NHK's Kōhaku Uta Gassen ten years in a row and held the Oricon record for most top-ten singles (64 as of 2012). It has fans overseas and performs concerts and events abroad.

Career

1997–1998: Formation and debut

In 1997, the TV program ASAYAN held an audition for a new vocalist for Tsunku's band Sharam Q. Tsunku formed a group from five of the runners-up: Yuko Nakazawa, Kaori Iida, Natsumi Abe, Asuka Fukuda, and Aya Ishiguro. They were challenged to sell 50,000 copies of the indie single "Ai no Tane" through hand sales within five days, and achieved it in four promotion days. The major debut was confirmed on November 30, 1997, and the group debuted on January 28, 1998 with "Morning Coffee." Its success brought in second-generation members Kei Yasuda, Mari Yaguchi, and Sayaka Ichii, making eight members. "Summer Night Town" followed, then "Daite Hold on Me!," which hit number one. The album First Time came in July 1998, and Tsunku also formed the first subgroup, Tanpopo, that year. The group's label, originally One Up Music, was rebranded Zetima in April 1998, with distribution moving to Sony Music Japan's Epic Records.

Nakazawa became the first leader as the oldest member. The official formation date is September 14, 1997, though other dates (including August 20, September 7, September 8, November 3, and November 30, 1997, and January 28, 1998) have been cited at various times.

1999–2000: "Love Machine" and the third and fourth generations

The fourth single "Memory Seishun no Hikari" reached number two on Oricon in early 1999, and Asuka Fukuda left to focus on her studies. "Manatsu no Kōsen" and "Furusato" followed, along with the album Second Morning in July. After third-generation member Maki Goto joined, "Love Machine" was released on September 9, 1999. It sold about 1.76 million copies, became the group's biggest hit, and was a social phenomenon that brought national popularity and ended the so-called "idol winter." Goto, Yasuda, and Ichii formed the sub-group Petit Moni.

In early 2000, "Koi no Dance Site" was released; Aya Ishiguro left before its release to marry, leaving seven members. The third album, 3rd: Love Paradise, sold over 800,000 copies and remains the group's best-selling studio album. Fourth-generation members Rika Ishikawa, Hitomi Yoshizawa, Nozomi Tsuji, and Ai Kago then joined; their first single, "Happy Summer Wedding," reached number one on Oricon with 1,370,000 copies sold. Sayaka Ichii left to pursue a solo career, and the group began performing in annual musicals.

2001 onward

In April 2001, leader Yuko Nakazawa graduated, and Kaori Iida became the second leader. On April 16, 2001, the sub-leader position was created, with Kei Yasuda as the first holder. Members continued to join and graduate. On May 21, 2013, at Reina Tanaka's graduation concert, the sub-leader system was revived, with ninth-generation Mizuki Fukumura and tenth-generation Haruna Iikubo as the first pair of co-sub-leaders. In July 2025, after tenth leader Erina Ikuta graduated, twelfth-generation Miki Nonaka became the eleventh leader, while eleventh-generation Sakura Oda stayed on as sub-leader and is set to graduate in 2026.

The current members are Sakura Oda, Miki Nonaka, Homare Okamura, Mei Yamazaki, Rio Sakurai, Haruka Inoue, Ako Yumigeta, Meisa Sugihara, Miyu Yasuda, Moa Suzuki, and Hanano Ishikawa.

Membership system

The lineup has ranged from five members to a maximum of sixteen (from the sixth generation's arrival until Yasuda's graduation), with age gaps of about 12 years at formation and up to 15 years. Departures are officially called "graduation" or, in some cases, "withdrawal." Early on "withdrawal" was more common, but from 2001 "graduation" became the official term. Former members go on to continue within Hello! Project as soloists or in other groups, stay with affiliated agencies, or retire; they are known as Morning Musume OGs.

Musical style

Rooted in J-POP and shaped by Tsunku's songwriting and production, early songs leaned toward mature pop, while "Love Machine" captured the mood of a recession-era Japan. As the core of Hello! Project, Morning Musume became the basis of groups such as Country Musume, Coconuts Musume, and Ice Creamusume, and spawned sub-units including Tanpopo, Petit Moni, Mini-Moni, Ecomoni, and Dream Morning Musume. Its defining trait is an identity that evolves through constant membership change.
