Southern All Stars, known as SAS, is a legendary Japanese rock band that debuted in 1978. The band, composed of five members, is celebrated for its unique blend of kayokyoku and J-POP. With Keisuke Kuwata as the lead vocalist, the band has left an indelible mark on the Japanese music scene, often referred to as a 'national rock band'.

Career History

Early Years

Southern All Stars was formed in 1974 at Aoyama Gakuin University's folk song club and made their major debut on June 25, 1978, with the single "Katte ni Sindbad". They quickly rose to fame with hits like "Itoshi no Ellie".

The 1980s

The 1980s saw hits like "Chako no Kaigan Monogatari", and the band expanded their musical style. The album "KAMAKURA" is particularly noted for its experimental and creative sound.

The 1990s

The single "TSUNAMI" was a commercial triumph, selling nearly 3 million copies and winning the 42nd Japan Record Award. This solidified Southern All Stars as a national band in Japan.

2000s Onwards

After announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2008, the band made a comeback in 2013 for their 35th anniversary. In 2018, they celebrated their 40th anniversary by releasing "Umi no Oh!! Yeah!!" and continue to be active today.

Recent Activities

In 2023, Southern All Stars celebrated their 45th anniversary with new single releases and successfully held the 'Chigasaki Live 2023'. They are also set to release their first original album in ten years, 'THANK YOU SO MUCH', in 2025.
