About
Ai Kawashima
Overview
Ai Kawashima (川嶋 あい, born February 21, 1986, in Fukuoka) is a Japanese J-pop singer-songwriter and pianist, signed to Double Wing under the Tsubasa Entertainment Group. Known as the "Angel of the Street" (路上の天使) after her street performances reached 1,000 in 2005, she debuted in 2003 as the vocalist of I WiSH, whose "Asu e no Tobira" became a hit. Her best-known solo songs include "Mienai Tsubasa" and "My Love." Her clear, transparent voice is often called an "angel's voice," and she is also known for building schools in developing countries and giving free concerts in disaster areas.
Career
Early life
Her father was missing before she was born, and her mother fell ill after giving birth and died when Kawashima was 3. After time in an infant home and a children's home, she was adopted by the Kawashima family, who ran a construction company. She lost her foster father at 10 and her foster mother at 16. Extremely shy as a child, she attended music classes and aspired to be an enka singer, even opening for performers such as Saburo Kitajima. Around age 10 she stood on the stage of Carnegie Hall in New York.
Enka debut and street performances (1999-2004)
In May 1999, as a second-year middle school student, she debuted as an enka singer with "Juu-roku Koi Gokoro / Anata ni Kataomoi," but sales were poor and she gave up within months. She moved to Tokyo in 2001, enrolling at Horikoshi High School before transferring to Clark Memorial International High School (graduating March 2004). On February 19, 2002 she began street performances in Yotsuya, then moved to Shibuya, and from June 2002 performed in earnest with a keyboard. She set three goals: hand-sell 5,000 self-produced CDs, perform 1,000 street shows, and hold a solo concert at Shibuya Public Hall. She reached the CD goal in May 2003 and held the Shibuya concert on August 20, 2003, where she revealed she was "ai," vocalist of I WiSH. "Asu e no Tobira" sold more than 900,000 copies. In December 2004 she completed a 47-prefecture live tour goal during a fan tour in Okinawa.
Solo career (2005-2010)
I WiSH disbanded on March 24, 2005 so she could focus on solo work. On March 30, 2005 she completed her 1,000th street performance in front of Hachiko at Shibuya Station, drawing over 1,000 people. Her single "Zetsubo to Kibo" (April 6, 2005) reached No. 9 on the Oricon chart, and her first full album "12-ko no Uta" (May 18, 2005) reached No. 5. "My Love" (February 14, 2007), the theme of Fuji TV's "Ainori," debuted at No. 5 weekly—the highest for an independent female solo artist—and ranked No. 2 on the 2007 Oricon annual indie singles chart. "Compass" was the theme of the film One Piece: Episode of Alabasta, in which she also voiced a character. In 2006 she joined THE AURIS (SUPER) BAND, whose "MY WAY" was used in a Toyota AURIS commercial. On June 4, 2008 she released the 5th-anniversary best albums SINGLE BEST and COUPLING BEST.
After two months of language study in New York from December 2008, she performed as the main closing act at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. (April 2009), at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's cherry blossom festival, and at Japan Day in Central Park (May 31, 2009), whose theme song was her "Daijobu da yo." In 2010 she released the picture-book CD "Sorairo Simple Treasure," featuring an English remake of "Kakera" with producer Andy Chase, and in December "I Remember," produced by jazz pianist Joe Sample. On August 20, 2010 she performed at Tokyo International Forum Hall A, her largest venue to date.
Humanitarian work
She funded a children's home in Ethiopia (2005), and supported school construction in Burkina Faso (2006) and Cambodia (2008). Through the NGO "I Love Wagon," founded by her and her staff, schools have also been opened in Liberia, East Timor and Bangladesh, with a goal of 100 schools. After the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake, she visited sixth-graders from Togura Elementary School in Minamisanriku, who had sung "Tabidachi no Hi ni..." at a shrine through the night of the tsunami. She sang it with them at a shelter and again, on piano, at their postponed graduation ceremony on August 21, 2011.
2010s to present
She held a memorial concert every August 20, the anniversary of her foster mother's death. In 2012 she marked the 10th at Shibuya Public Hall with the same setlist as ten years earlier, performing for about 2,000 people and debuting the new song "Jungle." She released the album "Shutter" (June 2014), the single "Tobira" (July 2015) and the album "Be Your Side" (October 2015), followed by the singles "Synchro" (2017), "Shiori" (February 2018) and "BIRTHDAY" (October 2018), and the albums "Ai ×" (May 2019) and "Hari no Ana" (June 2020). In 2020 the August 20 concert and the "Hari no Ana" tour were postponed and then cancelled due to COVID-19. In March 2021 she released "Dounika Kyou made Ikite Kita" featuring Ryota Fujimaki. After undergoing vocal cord surgery in May 2022, she announced that the 2023 show would be the last August 20 concert. She released "Document" in June 2023, the three-disc best-of "My Own Pieces The Best Selection of Ai Kawashima" on August 20, 2023, "Kizuna" in April 2024, and "Ashita e no Tobira - From THE FIRST TAKE" in May 2025.

Her songs have appeared in anime and games: "Zetsubo to Kibo" in Shining Force Neo, "Compass" in One Piece: Episode of Alabasta, "Kimi no Koe" in The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and "Door Crawl" in Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon.
