AKB48 (pronounced A.K.B. Forty-Eight) is a Japanese idol girl group formed in 2005, based in Akihabara, Tokyo. Produced by Yasushi Akimoto, the group operates under the concept of "Idols You Can Meet," fostering close relationships with fans through regular performances and events. AKB48 has become the highest-selling female musical act in Japanese history, with over 60 million records sold as of 2023.

Activity History

• 2005: Debuted on December 8 with their first performance at the AKB48 Theater. Team A is formed as the initial group.
• 2006: Released their first indie album "Sakura no Hanabiratachi" on February 1. Major debut with the single "Aitakatta" on October 25, gaining significant attention.
• 2007: Teams K and B are added, solidifying the group's structure. The first television appearance occurs in October.
• 2009: Achieved their first Oricon weekly number one with the single "RIVER."
• 2010: The single "Heavy Rotation" becomes a massive hit, selling over 500,000 copies, marking a significant achievement in J-Pop history.
• 2011: Wins the Japan Record Award for "Flying Get."
• 2012: Wins consecutive Japan Record Awards for "Manatsu no Sounds good!"
• 2020: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, performances and events were temporarily halted, but the group continued engaging with fans through online activities and the OUC48 project.
• 2023: Released their 61st single "Doushitemo Kimi ga Suki da" and announced their transition to EMI Records.
