About

BENNIE K

Overview

BENNIE K was a Japanese urban contemporary female duo made up of vocalist YUKI and rapper CICO. Formed in 1999, they debuted on January 24, 2001 with the single "Melody" and concluded about 22 years of activity on January 24, 2022. Their 8th single "Sunrise" gave them their first Oricon top 10, "Dreamland" debuted at No. 2, and their 4th album "Japana-rhythm" became their first No. 1 on the weekly Oricon albums chart.

Formation and Name

In the summer of 1999, YUKI was on a homestay in Los Angeles, where she was undergoing voice training, and it turned out to be the home of CICO's aunt. The two became friends, returned to Japan and pursued music separately, then teamed up for a Christmas event and decided to work together.

The name BENNIE K comes from Benkei (BEN-K). After deciding to form the duo, they visited Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto to pray for a hit, and on the way home at Gojo Bridge recalled the legendary duel between Benkei and Ushiwakamaru. Despite their age gap, they resolved to aim for the top together and adopted the idea. The first song YUKI learned in guitar lessons and the first she sang with CICO was Ben E. King's "Stand by Me", which inspired the final form of the name. Benkei symbolizes strength, and the name expresses their vow to be strong women and strong artists.

The contrast between YUKI's vocals and CICO's rap was central to their work, and they collaborated frequently with artists such as 2BACKKA, m-flo, SEAMO and SOFFet.
