Gen Hoshino
Overview
Gen Hoshino (星野 源, born January 28, 1981, in Saitama Prefecture) is a Japanese singer-songwriter, musician, actor and writer. He led the instrumental band SAKEROCK (2000–2015), playing guitar and marimba, and is also an essayist and columnist. He is managed by Amuse for music and Saoki (さておき) for acting, and records for SPEEDSTAR RECORDS under Victor Entertainment. His theme song "Koi" and the accompanying "Koi Dance" from the drama The Full-Time Wife Escapist became a social phenomenon.
Career
Early years
Hoshino graduated from Jiyu no Mori Gakuen and began guitar and theater in junior high school. After seeing a Otona Keikaku (Otona Keikaku) stage play in high school, he joined the troupe's workshop. He formed SAKEROCK in October 2000 and became a member of Otona Keikaku after taking part in the 2003 play Ningen Gohasan. He appeared in the 2005 drama Tiger & Dragon and from 2007 co-wrote a magazine column with Haruomi Hosono, "Chiheisen no Soudan". Leading the video unit Yamada Ichiro, he made SAKEROCK's MV "Honyarara", which won Best Conceptual Video at the 2009 Space Shower Music Video Awards.
Solo debut and illness
He debuted as a solo artist with the album Baka no Uta in June 2010. His first physical single, "Kudaranai no Naka ni" (March 2011), reached No. 17 on the Oricon Singles Chart; "Film", "Yume no Soto e", "Shiranai" (2012) and "Gag" (2013) all charted in the top 10. His second album, Episode (September 2011), peaked at No. 5 and won the Semi-Grand Prize at the 4th CD Shop Awards. The third album, Stranger (May 2013), peaked at No. 2 and was certified gold by the RIAJ. Since 2011 he has co-hosted the Ustream program Sake no Sakana with Ichiro Yamaguchi of Sakanaction, renamed Yoru no Television in 2014.
On December 22, 2012, Hoshino was diagnosed with a subarachnoid hemorrhage and underwent surgery. He returned on February 28, 2013, but a recurrence was found around June and he paused again; his planned Budokan concert was postponed. In September he announced a successful second surgery and his discharge. His 2013 performances in Blindly in Love and Why Don't You Play in Hell? earned several newcomer actor awards, including at the Japan Academy Film Prize. He gave a comeback concert at Nippon Budokan on February 6, 2014.
Breakthrough
In 2015 he moved his music management to Amuse, and SAKEROCK disbanded on June 2 with a final show at Ryogoku Kokugikan. His fourth album, Yellow Dancer (December 2, 2015, Speedstar Records), debuted atop both the Oricon and Billboard Japan album charts and was certified platinum by the RIAJ. He won the CD Shop Awards in 2016, and his radio show Gen Hoshino's All Night Nippon began regular broadcasts in March 2016.
In The Full-Time Wife Escapist he played Hiramasa Tsuzaki opposite Yui Aragaki; the drama averaged a 14.5% rating (peaking at 20.8% in the finale), won him several Best Supporting Actor awards, and "Koi" was its theme. In 2017 he performed the "Continues" tour (10 cities, 20 shows). His fifth album, Pop Virus, spent four consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Oricon Album Chart, went double platinum, and earned a Best Album prize at the 33rd Japan Gold Disc Awards, alongside a Best Song prize for "Idea". In March 2019 he became the first artist to win four trophies at the Space Shower Music Awards.
In February–March 2019 he held his first five-dome tour, Dome Tour 2019 "Pop Virus" (5 venues, 8 shows). On August 30, 2019 his entire catalog arrived on streaming services and he opened an Instagram account. From November 25 to December 14 he held his first overseas tour, the Pop Virus World Tour (4 locations, 5 shows).
2020s
The planned March 2020 "Assembly Vol.01" events were canceled due to COVID-19. On July 12, 2020 he held his first audience-free streaming concert, "Gratitude", at Shibuya CLUB QUATTRO, and in October released Gen Hoshino Singles Box "GRATITUDE". He won Best Supporting Actor at the 45th Hochi Film Awards for The Voice of Sin.
He released "Souzou" (February 2021), "Fushigi" (April 2021) and "Cube" (October 2021). In April 2022 "Comedy" (喜劇) became the ending theme of the first season of the Spy × Family anime; a version featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff and Kaidi Tatham followed in June. In July he released "I Wanna Be Your Ghost" (異世界混合大舞踏会, feat. Obake), the main theme of the film Yokaipedia, which debuted at No. 1 on Oricon's weekly Digital Singles Chart. He followed with "Life" (生命体, August 2023) and "Lighthouse" (September 2023), then the double A-side single "Why" / "Life" (光の跡/生命体) on December 27, 2023; "Why" is used in the end credits of Spy × Family Code: White.
In November 2024 he announced a sixth album and his first nationwide arena tour in about six years. He released "Eureka" (January 2025) and "Star" (April 2025), followed by the album Gen on May 14, 2025. He also performed the Gen Hoshino presents MAD HOPE Asia Tour (Taipei, Shanghai and Seoul, six shows) in 2025, and released the single "Ikidomari" in November 2025. On April 30, 2026, the live video "Gen Hoshino presents MAD HOPE Japan Tour" debuted at No. 1 on Oricon's weekly video ranking, tying the record for the most No. 1 music DVD/Blu-ray releases by a solo artist (seven). His radio show All Night Nippon ended at the end of March 2026, with a Nippon Budokan event held on March 8.
Acting and writing
His film debut was Lee Sang-il's 69. In 2012 he made his voice-acting debut as Buddha in the OVA of Saint Young Men, and reprised the role in the 2013 film, for which he provided the theme song "Gag". In 2013 he starred in Blindly in Love and Why Don't You Play in Hell?. He voiced the protagonist of The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl (2017) and the Father in Mamoru Hosoda's Mirai (2018). In 2019 he starred in Samurai Shifters and played Kazushige Hirasawa in the NHK Taiga drama Idaten. His books include Soshite Seikatsu wa Tsuzuku (2009), Hataraku Otoko (2013), Yomigaeru Hentai (2014), Hoshino Gen Zatsudanshu 1 (2014), Chiheisen no Soudan (2015), Inochi no Shaso Kara (2017) and its 2024 sequel.
Nise Akira
"Akira Nise" (ニセ明) is a recurring character modeled on a young Akira Fuse, with long hair and sunglasses, created with Fuse's permission. The character grew out of Hoshino's 2014 comeback concert, where he appeared in the encore as Fuse and sang "Kimi wa Bara yori Utsukushii" to add humor. Original songs include "REAL" and "Fake"; in 2017 he wrote the lead song "Ima" for Kanjani Eight's album under the name "akira nise". From June 2023 the character had a segment on All Night Nippon and hosted a special edition on October 22, 2024. "Fake" was released digitally on June 23, 2025, marking the character's major debut.
Musical style
Hoshino cites B'z's "LADY NAVIGATION" as his J-POP origin, and listened to UNICORN, WANDS, Southern All Stars and CHAGE and ASKA. He is influenced by Black music such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Isley Brothers and D'Angelo, and defined his R&B- and soul-inflected sound as "Yellow Music" — though in his 2024 essay collection he wrote that trying to turn it into a genre was a mistake. A devoted fan of Hajime Hana and the Crazy Cats, he has said "Crazy Crazy" was inspired by them.
Personal life
Hoshino married actress Yui Aragaki, his co-star in The Full-Time Wife Escapist, announcing it on May 19, 2021. On October 13, 2026, he announced the birth of their first child.
