About
HALCALI
Overview
HALCALI (ハルカリ, Harukari) is a Japanese female duo from Meguro, Tokyo, made up of HALCA (Haruka) and YUCALI (Yukari). The name is a portmanteau of their two names. Their debut album, Halcali Bacon (2003), reached number five on the Oricon Albums Chart, making it the first album by a female hip-hop artist to enter the top ten in Japan. In 2025 their song "Otsukare Summer" went viral again, bringing the duo back into the global spotlight.

Career
Formation and debut (2002–2004)
The two were close friends from elementary school and attended the same local dance school in Meguro; they aspired to be dancers, not singers. In 2002 they spotted a pink flier for a female rapper audition held by RIP SLYME and were chosen from hundreds of entrants. They were introduced at a free RIP SLYME concert at the Budokan, and debuted on January 8, 2003 with the single "Tandem", which entered the Oricon chart at No. 19. Their second and third singles, "Electric Sensei" and "Girigiri Surf Rider" (both 2003), leaned toward rap rather than pop; the latter drew Western attention after appearing on Adam and Joe Go Tokyo. The album Ongaku no Susume followed in 2004.
Expansion (2005–2012)
The duo were fully produced by O.T.F (Oshare Track Factory), the production unit of RIP SLYME's RYO-Z and DJ FUMIYA, though O.T.F's involvement diminished from around 2005 due in part to DJ FUMIYA's health. Releases included "Look" (2006), "Tougenkyou / Lights, Camera. Action!" and "It's Party Time" (2007), the album Cyborg Oretachi (2007), Tokyo Groove, "Long Kiss Good Bye" (2008), "Re:Yasashii Kimochi" (2009), "Endless Night", "You May Dream" and "Roman Hikou" (2010), Tokyo Connection (2011), "Gondola no Uta" and the album Halcali no Okawari (2012).
They made their American debut in May 2008 as musical guests of honor at Anime Central, performed in New York's Central Park on June 1, 2008 as part of a Japan Day festival, and played at MIDEM in Cannes that year. In 2009, "Konya wa Boogie Back", used in a Nissan commercial, was released digitally and then on CD after strong response. In 2011, "Kyo no Watashi wa Kigen ga Ii" generated a flood of inquiries after appearing in a commercial, and a tofubeats remix followed in 2012. They also appeared regularly at festivals such as ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL and COUNTDOWN JAPAN.
They were active individually as well: hosting TOKYO FM's BUZZ ROOM on Wednesdays, YUCALI as a regular on Shin Domoto Kyodai (later joined by HALCA), HALCA as host of MTV Apt. from April to June 2006, and both as fashion magazine models and columnists.
Hiatus and solo paths (2012 onward)
After appearing at COUNTDOWN JAPAN 12/13 on December 28, 2012, they ended their contracts with their agency and record label and, from 2013, moved to individual activities without public activity as a unit. HALCA began working as a photographer in 2012 and held a solo exhibition in 2013; she also owns HALCAFE, a baked-goods stand café that uses no eggs, dairy or refined white sugar. YUCALI qualified as a nutritionist in 2013, married in 2015, and became a catering planner.
Revival (2024–2026)
In 2025, "Otsukare Summer", from Halcali Bacon, passed 800 million TikTok plays in July and 10 million Spotify streams; by November it exceeded 4.7 billion TikTok plays and 44 million Spotify streams, charting in the top 50 of viral charts in 35 countries including the US, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea. Their label For Life began full-scale promotion, releasing a new fully animated music video on September 19, 2025, which passed 9 million views by November.
On September 15, 2025 they appeared as secret guests at TOKYO No.1 SOUL SET's stage at Koyabu Sonic 2025, performing "Konya wa Boogie Back" as HALCALI for the first time in over a decade. In January 2026 official accounts were reactivated and early singles reissued, and "Otsukare Summer" was re-released as an EP on March 2, 2026. They announced an appearance at SUMMER SONIC 2026 in April, their first officially announced live show in 13 years; in May the song was nominated for Best Viral Song at MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026, and on May 22 they performed it on THE FIRST TAKE. At SUMMER SONIC on August 16, 2026 they set a Spotify Stage attendance record. On September 2, 2026 they released "GUIN GUIN GUIN", their first new song in 14 years, created as the September theme song for the TV Tokyo children's program Shina Pushu and written, composed and arranged by O.T.F.
Musical style
Early on, HALCALI moved away from mainstream J-pop toward a blend of pop and rap: an airy, self-parodying "bubblegum" rap in the vein of earlier acts such as East End X Yuri. Much of their early material was written and produced by RYO-Z and DJ FUMIYA of O.T.F, giving them a stylish, catchy hip-hop sound. Their music has been described as a fresh fusion of hip-hop and the duo's own musicality.
