Overview
Hump Back (Japanese: ハンプバック, Hepburn: Hampubakku) is an all-female Japanese rock band formed in 2009 in Higashiōsaka, Osaka. The current lineup consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Momoko Hayashi, bassist Pika, and drummer Misaki. Active in various music scenes across Japan, they made their major debut in 2018. Hump Back's music encapsulates the joys and sorrows of everyday life, touching the hearts of their audience.
Career Timeline
- 2009: Hump Back was formed in a high school light music club, initially covering songs by Chatmonchy.
- 2012: The band participated in a youth rock music competition, 'Senko Riot 2012', reaching the Osaka finals. They released their first indie EP, 'say good bye'.
- 2013: Frequent member changes occurred, with Yukkii leaving the band and 373 joining as a permanent member. Another member, Megu, also departed.
- 2016: The current lineup was solidified, and they joined the indie label 'WELL BUCKET RECORDS', releasing their first nationwide mini-album, 'Yoru ni nattara'.
- 2018: They made their major debut under VAP with the single 'Haikei shonen yo', which reached number 13 on the Oricon charts.
- 2019: Hump Back established their dedicated label 'Hayashi Ongaku Kyōsitsu' and released their first major album, 'Ningen nanosa'.
- 2021: They released a new album 'ACHATTER' and held a special concert called 'Our Wedding Ceremony' at Nippon Budokan, celebrating their recent marriages with fans.
- 2023: It was announced that one of the members was pregnant, leading to a temporary halt in live activities. By May 2024, all members announced they had given birth and expressed their commitment to continue their music careers while raising their families.
Musical Characteristics
Hump Back's music falls under the J-POP genre, characterized by heartfelt expressions of daily realities. Momoko Hayashi often writes lyrics based on her own experiences, sometimes adopting a male perspective in her storytelling. Their sound is influenced by punk rock, featuring strong beats while conveying messages of encouragement and support for youth. Hump Back aims to maintain a deep connection with their fans through their music and performances in the future.
