About

jo0ji

Overview

jo0ji (born September 10, 1999) is a Japanese singer-songwriter from and based in Tottori Prefecture, signed to Kyun Music. He writes, composes and arranges his own songs. The son of a fisherman, he works at a fishing port while pursuing music, though he gets seasick and cannot go out on boats. In January 2026 he drew attention by writing "Yoake no uta" (よあけのうた), the ending theme for the TV anime Jujutsu Kaisen "The Culling Game Part 1."

Career

  • 2021–2022: In June 2021 he posted a demo of "Fukutsu ni Hana" (不屈に花), his first original song, to YouTube (later made private), followed by demos of "Dasa" (October 2021), "Emo" (February 2022) and "Usui" (March 2022). He released "Fukutsu ni Hana" digitally on August 3, 2022, which began his friendship with imase.
  • 2023: His first EP "475" arrived on September 20, with WONK's Fumitake Ezaki and Miki Inoue co-arranging. It contains five songs, including a re-arranged "Fukutsu ni Hana," with string players Shuntaro Tokita and Sonoko Muraoka and MONO NO AWARE's Yutaka Yanagisawa on drums; the cover art is by Shintaro Kira. He made his live debut on November 24 at Spotify O-nest and appeared at "Margt ISLAND 23" the next day.
  • 2024: Selected for Spotify's "RADAR: Early Noise 2024" in January. Singles followed: "Lantern" (Jan 31), "escaper" (Feb 28, with actor Ryo Narita in the music video), "Dasa" (Jul 10, FM802's July heavy rotation), "Nukui" (Aug 7, used in a Yakan no Mugicha web film), "Manazashi" (Sep 4), "BAE" (Oct 2) and "Work song" (Oct 30). He played JAPAN JAM 2024, announced his SMEJ contract at Sign's FES in Tottori on June 30, and held his first one-man shows, "Isaribi," in Tokyo (Nov 1) and Osaka (Nov 9).
  • 2025: Released "Utau" (Mar 12) and "Jouji" (Jun 11), then the album "Aeka" (あえか) on July 9, which first included the new songs "Emo" and "onajimi." He wrote "Free Bird" for Hana Hope in March and played festivals including Tokyo Metropolitan Rock Festival, Fuji Rock Festival '25 and Rock in Japan Festival 2025. On November 13 he released "Usui" and began the "Aekanaru" tour of six cities in eight shows.
  • 2026: "Yoake no uta" came out on January 10, with "Hikari no uta" released ahead on February 18 and the CD single on March 4. On July 24 he released "I-BULL," the opening theme of the TV anime BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity. He also appeared at Taiwan's MEGAPORT FESTIVAL and at Jujutsu Kaisen in Concert in London, Rotterdam and Paris, and a ten-date one-man tour, "Ikari," is scheduled.

Musical style

His songs are often modeled on friends and acquaintances or built from conversations with them, and he posts self-written liner notes online. He grew up hearing Miyuki Nakajima, Takuro Yoshida, George Yanagi and RC Succession on his parents' records, and says they shaped his music. Watching films is his hobby and often inspires his writing. Producer Junji Ishiwatari described his sound as having modern arrangements with melodies and lyrics deeply influenced by classic Japanese kayokyoku.
