About

Kana Nishino

Overview

Kana Nishino (西野カナ, born March 18, 1989, in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture) is a Japanese singer-songwriter nicknamed "Kanayan." She made her major-label debut on February 20, 2008, with the single "I" and became one of Japan's most popular female artists of the late 2000s and 2010s, known for relatable lyrics about love. In 2016 she won the Grand Prix at the 58th Japan Record Awards for "Anata no Suki na Tokoro," and in 2017 she became the first female artist born in the Heisei era to perform at Tokyo Dome. She has sold over six million records and over 46 million downloads.

Career

Early life and beginnings

From childhood Nishino was interested in living abroad, staying with host families in Guam in fifth grade and Los Angeles in her first year of high school. After returning, she began studying folk songs. In 2005, at 16, her mother entered her in the "Super Heroine Audition Miss Phoenix," held by Kadokawa Pictures and Sony Music Artists; although it was an actress audition, her singing stood out among 40,000 applicants. She signed with SME Records in 2006, using her high school years for vocal training and Tsugaru folk songs, and in 2007 began university to study English literature. Around then, Australian duo NERVO offered her a song, which she rewrote with Japanese lyrics and retitled "I."

2008–2009: Debut and breakthrough

"I" was released on February 20, 2008, with a download version distributed simultaneously in Japan and the US. "Style." was chosen as an ending theme for the anime Soul Eater. In September 2008 she opened all four dates of Cyndi Lauper's Japan tour, and in December she was named the youngest-ever Mie Prefecture Tourism Ambassador. Her fifth single, "Tookutemo feat. Wise" (March 2009), became her breakthrough, and her first album, Love One. (June 24, 2009), spawned the hit "Kimi ni Aitaku Naru Kara," the first song she helped compose. She made her first appearance on Music Station in July 2009.

2010–2016: Rise to the top

Her second album, To Love (June 23, 2010), was her first number-one album, topped both Oricon and Billboard album charts, ranked third on Oricon's 2010 annual chart and sold 950,000 copies. Its preceding singles "Motto...," "Dear.../MAYBE," "Best Friend" and "Aitakute Aitakute" all entered the Oricon top ten and were certified "million" for downloads by the RIAJ; "Aitakute Aitakute" was the year's top-selling digital song. She made her first appearance on NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen on December 31, 2010, and appeared every year through 2018.

In 2011 she held her first national hall tour, Kanayan Tour 2011 Summer (16 shows), ending with her first Nippon Budokan concert. Love Place (September 2012) won Best Album at the 54th Japan Record Awards. In 2013 she released the best-of albums Love Collection mint and pink, which took No. 1 and No. 2 on Oricon. "Darling" (2014) became a long-running hit, and "Torisetsu" (2015), the theme of the film Heroine Shikkaku, was 2015's best-selling digital song with over one million copies. She also released the B-side collections Secret Collection RED and GREEN in November 2015, and was named Billboard Japan's Artist of the Year in 2014 and 2015.

Just LOVE (July 2016) made her the first Heisei-born solo artist with two consecutive weeks at number one on Oricon. In December 2016 she won the Grand Prix at the Japan Record Awards for "Anata no Suki na Tokoro"—the first female solo artist to do so since Koda Kumi in 2005—and the Grand Prix at the 49th Japan Cable Awards for "Dear Bride."

2017–2019: Dome tour and hiatus

In 2017 she held her first two-dome tour, Kana Nishino Dome Tour 2017 "Many Thanks," with four shows at Kyocera Dome Osaka and Tokyo Dome drawing 160,000 fans. That year she released the singles "Pa," "Girls" and "Tewo Tsunagu Riyu," followed by the album Love It on November 15. In 2018 her LOVE it Tour (hall and arena legs, 38 shows) drew 200,000 people, and she released "I Love You" and "Bedtime Story." In November 2018 she issued the 10th-anniversary best-ofs Love Collection 2 pink and mint, which again took No. 1 and No. 2 on Oricon—a first for a solo artist to achieve twice. On January 8, 2019, she announced an indefinite hiatus, which began after the Kana Nishino Love Collection Live 2019 show at Yokohama Arena on February 3, broadcast live to cinemas across Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Hiatus

On March 19, 2019, she announced she had married a non-celebrity the day before, on her 30th birthday. Her fan club "Nishino-ke" ended its services on March 31, 2020. On June 1, 2021, her entire catalog of 181 songs became available on streaming services. She announced the birth of her first child on August 4, 2023, and on February 14, 2024, marked her 15th anniversary with the four-disc ALL TIME BEST Love Collection 15th Anniversary and the video collection MV Collection.

2024 onward: Return

On June 25, 2024, she announced her return and released "EYES ON YOU" on July 5. "Mata Kimi ni Koi o Suru" followed in August, and her first-ever EP, Love Again, arrived on September 18. On November 13–14 she held her first post-return concert, Love Again Live 2024, at Yokohama Arena; it was released as a live album in January 2025. From April 5 to June 22, 2025, she toured for the first time in seven years with Fall In Love With You Again Tour 2025. In 2025 she also released "With You" (May), a couples' love song selection album (May), "Magical Star Shine Make-up☆" (July) and the album Hajimete no Nishino Kana (August). She made her first THE FIRST TAKE appearance on July 11, performing "Aitakute Aitakute," and returned on July 29 with "Magical Star Shine Make-up☆." On December 17–18 she held the Christmas live "Christmas Magic" at K-Arena Yokohama, drawing 40,000 over two days; the new song "Kimi no Sei" debuted there and was released as a digital single on February 6, 2026. On May 15, 2026, she released the digital collaboration "LOVE BEAT (feat. NiziU)," and on October 1, 2026, she announced she would end her exclusive contract with Sony Music Artists and go independent.

Musical style

Nishino rose with R&B-leaning songs and gradually moved toward pop, venturing into country pop in the mid-2010s with "Darling" and "Torisetsu." Her singles mostly deal with love and friendship, while B-sides and album tracks often lean toward club and R&B styles with plenty of English lyrics. Among her formative influences she cites Jennifer Lopez, Eminem and Shizuka Kudo; she was devoted to reggae from junior high through her first year of university and also loved Christina Aguilera and Ciara.

She has written nearly all her lyrics since debut, starting with "I." Her lyrics draw on her own and friends' experiences, and she approaches each song like screenwriting for a film, sometimes conducting surveys and interviews with friends as "marketing research." Her association with the Gyaru subculture led her music to be dubbed "Gyaru Enka" ("gyaru heartbreak songs"), and she is widely regarded as a fashion icon among young women.
