About

Kumi Koda

Overview

Kumiko Kōda (born November 13, 1982), known professionally as Koda Kumi (倖田來未), is a Japanese singer from Kyoto, known for her urban and R&B-flavored pop. Her real name is Kumiko Kuriyama (née Kanda/Kōda). She records for rhythm zone and is managed by Avex Management. Her younger sister is the singer Misono, and her husband is KENJI03, vocalist of BACK-ON. Famed for the "ero-kakkoii" (erotic cool) style, she became one of Japan's top stars in the mid-2000s, and Oricon named her the top-selling artist of 2006 and 2007.

Career

Early life

Born into a family of musicians, Koda had a shakuhachi master for a grandfather and a koto-teacher mother. She began performing Japanese dance on stage around age three, and in 1992 passed an audition for the Toei Kyoto acting school's children's class. In 1999, in her second year of high school, she took second place in Avex's "avex dream 2000" audition, earning a contract. She also passed the second round of the Morning Musume additional-member audition but declined.

2000–2003: Debut and early career

In November 2000 she released "Take Back" in the US under the name KODA, peaking at number 18 on the Billboard dance sales chart. She debuted in Japan on December 6, 2000 with the same song on rhythm zone, but it was not a major hit. "Trust Your Love" and "Color of Soul" followed in 2001; a remix of the former reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart. Her debut album Affection arrived in March 2002 and Grow into One in March 2003. In 2003, her seventh single "real Emotion/1000 no Kotoba" became the theme for the video game Final Fantasy X-2 and reached number 3 on Oricon. Because her agency kept her off television, she mostly sang in clubs, and single sales were weak for about a year. Her third album Feel My Mind came in February 2004.

2004–2009: Breakthrough and peak

In May 2004 her eleventh single "Love & Honey", featuring a cover of the Cutie Honey theme, returned her to the top ten and became her breakthrough song. She released the album Secret in February 2005, the single "Butterfly" in June, and her first greatest-hits album Best: First Things in September, which sold over a million copies. From December 2005 to February 2006 she ran the "12 Singles Project", releasing one single per week; its first entry, "you", gave her her first number-one debut on Oricon. She won the 47th Japan Record Award and made her first appearance on NHK's Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

Best: Second Session followed in March 2006, selling about 1.8 million copies. Singles that year included "Koi no Tsubomi" (May), "4 Hot Wave" (July, her best-selling single) and "Yume no Uta/Futari de…" (October, number one). The album Black Cherry (December 2006) topped the Oricon chart for four weeks and passed one million copies, her best-selling original album. She won the Japan Gold Disc Award's Artist of the Year two years running.

In March 2007 she released "But/Aishō" and the ballad compilation Best: Bounce & Lovers; "Ai no Uta" came in September and "Last Angel feat. TVXQ" in November. She finally played the Tokyo Dome in December 2007. The 2008 album Kingdom, with a music video for every track, debuted at number one even while she was suspended from activity over a radio remark. She returned in April 2008 and released "Moon" in June with a collaboration with Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas. In 2009 she issued the album Trick (January), "It's all Love!" with sister Misono (March), which made them the first sibling act to debut at number one on Oricon, and gave her first solo overseas concert in Taipei in October.

2010–2012: Tenth anniversary and hiatus

Best: Third Universe & 8th AL "Universe" appeared in February 2010, followed by an arena tour. In July she held her first solo outdoor concert, Koda Kumi Dream Music Park, over two days at Yokohama Stadium, and released "Gossip Candy". The album Dejavu came in March 2011, along with her 50th single "4 Times". She announced her marriage that year and took a break for childbirth after the Kōhaku on December 31. The album Japonesque (January 2012) gave her an eighth straight year at number one on the Oricon album chart. After giving birth, she released the remix album Beach Mix and, in October, the single "Go to the Top".

2013–2015

She staged the Premium Night Love & Songs shows, released the ballad "Koishikute" and the cover album Color the Cover. Bon Voyage (February 2014) hit number one and its roughly 60-date tour sold out, ending in Taiwan. Her self-produced contact lens brand loveil passed 1.53 million boxes sold in June 2014. Walk of My Life (March 2015) also reached number one, extending a run of eight consecutive number-one studio albums beginning with Black Cherry.

Recent activity (2023–2025)

In 2023 she released "Trust・Last" (theme for Kamen Rider Geats) in March, "BLACK WINGS" in July, "Let’s fight for love!" in August, and in December "Tōi Machi no Dokoka de…", "SO FEVER", "NEVER GIVE IT UP" and "Vroom". In 2024 came "Silence" (February), the album UNICORN (April), "Jump to the Breeze" (August) and "This weekend" (December). In 2025 she released LIVE IN METAVERSE ~THE BEST~ (March), "ChaO!" (July), "De-CODE" (August) and Driving Hit's 10 (October).

Musical style

Koda blends urban pop, R&B and dance music, and is known for the ero-kakkoii image, sensual performances, a distinctive voice and strong vocals. Her catalog ranges from dance tracks to ballads and includes many tie-ins with games, anime, films and dramas. Though her early releases presented a conservative, quiet image, she became a fashion leader among young women.
