MYTH & ROID

Overview

MYTH & ROID is a Japanese contemporary creative unit centered on producer Tom-H@ck (guitar, keyboards, composition, production) and hotaru (lyrics, concept and story planning), featuring multiple vocalists over the years. The unit debuted on August 26, 2015 with the single "L.L.L." and is currently managed by CAT entertainment. The name combines "Myth," evoking the past, and "Android," evoking the future, reflecting a desire to merge each member's roots and open up a new world. Its songs have appeared in many anime series, especially in the isekai genre, including Overlord, Re:Zero, The Saga of Tanya the Evil, Boogiepop and Others, Made in Abyss, Isekai Cheat Magician, Cautious Hero and Arknights.

Career

Debut and the Mayu era (2015-2017)

In July 2015 the group performed the ending theme "L.L.L." (Leashed Luminous Love) for the TV anime Overlord, and made its CD debut on August 26 with the single of the same name. It peaked at No. 29 on the weekly Oricon chart and No. 3 on iTunes Japan's download rankings.

The second single, "ANGER/ANGER" (February 24, 2016), was the ending theme of BBK/BRNK and reached No. 82 on Oricon. The third single, "STYX HELIX" (May 25, 2016), was the first ending theme of Re:Zero, and the fourth, "Paradisus-Paradoxum" (August 24, 2016), was the second opening theme. On February 8, 2017 the fifth single "JINGO JUNGLE" became the opening theme of The Saga of Tanya the Evil. The group also performed theme songs for two Overlord theatrical films in 2017, and released its first album, eYe's, on April 24, 2017.

Kihow joins (2017-2020)

In 2017, Kihow, discovered by Tom-H@ck, joined as vocalist. Having lived overseas, she sings in both English and Japanese, and her ever-changing vocal style has earned her the nickname "rainbow-colored voice." In November 2017 original vocalist Mayu Maeshima graduated to pursue a solo career, debuting solo in April 2019.

The sixth single "HYDRA" was announced on December 18, 2017 and released on February 7, 2018 as Kihow's first single with the unit; it served as the ending theme for Overlord II. "Voracity" followed later that year as the opening for Overlord III.

In 2019, "shadowgraph" opened Boogiepop and Others (its coupling track "Remembrance" was used in the first Tanya the Evil film), "Panta Rhei" opened Isekai Cheat Magician, and "Tit for Tat" opened Cautious Hero. The best-of album MUSEUM-THE BEST OF MYTH & ROID- followed on March 4, 2020, with the new song "Forever Lost" serving as the ending theme of the film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, alongside "Cracked Black."

Independence and recent activity (2020-)

On July 1, 2020, following the independence and merger of its former agency TaWaRa, the unit moved to CAT entertainment. Its first digital album, Future Is Mine, arrived on October 28, 2020 as its first worldwide digital release.

In March 2021 the group announced "Brilliant Bright," a collaboration celebrating the 3rd anniversary of Honkai Impact 3rd's global version, released worldwide on April 7, 2021. That year Kihow also handled theme songs for a theatrical drama, guested on the compilation Wacompi, collaborated with Touhou LostWord, and in October announced a solo career while remaining a MYTH & ROID vocalist; her first digital single "glitter" came out on November 8, 2021. On December 21, 2021, Mili's "In Hell We Live, Lament" feat. Kihow, written for Limbus Company, was released.

On March 3, 2023, all singles, the first album eYe's and the best album MUSEUM were made available on streaming services. In 2026 the unit performed the ending theme for the TV anime Cleverates II; since the opening was sung by former vocalist Mayu, viewers could hear both the current and former vocalists in one series.
