About

Takako Okamura

Overview

Takako Okamura (岡村孝子, born January 29, 1962 in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture) is a Japanese singer-songwriter. She debuted as half of the duo Aming and began a solo career in 1985. Her albums have sold more than six million copies in total, and her signature song is "Yume o Akiramenaide" (夢をあきらめないで).

Career

Early life

Her father, Hideo Okamura, was a labor activist who became a member of the Okazaki city council in 1967. Okamura graduated from Aichi Prefectural Okazaki Kita High School in 1980. She studied classical piano from childhood and hoped to become a teacher, but hearing Masashi Sada's single "Amayadori" in 1977 changed her course and she became a singer-songwriter.

Aming

She entered Sugiyama Jogakuen University in 1981 and formed the duo Aming with classmate Haruko Kato. In spring 1982 they entered the Yamaha Popular Song Contest and won the grand prize with "Matsu wa" (待つわ), which became the best-selling single of 1982 on the Oricon annual chart. The duo went on hiatus and disbanded in 1984, and Okamura returned to university before leaving it.

Solo career

Two years later she moved to Tokyo again and made her solo debut in 1985 on Funhouse (now Ariola Japan). Her first album, Yume no Ki, came out in October 1985. In 1986 her cover of Takao Kisugi's "Hagure Sou na Tenshi" was used in a Honda Today commercial and boosted her popularity; it remains her only released song for which she wrote neither lyrics nor music.

"Yume o Akiramenaide" (1987), an encouraging anthem that won broad support, became her signature work. It was originally tied to a Musashi preparatory school commercial, later appeared in a junior high school music textbook, and was used as the theme of the 2005 film Gyakkyo Nine, for which a remastered version was released. Known for expressing the uncertainty of love, sorrow, and loneliness, she became a charismatic figure among young people and was dubbed the "guru of office ladies" in the early 1990s. By 2006 she had released 15 original albums and 30 singles.

She moved to east west japan in 1995 and returned to BMG Funhouse (now BMG JAPAN) in 2003. In 2005 she performed for the first time with her idol Masashi Sada on NHK's Yume Ongakukan, leading to the 2006 single "Gin'iro no Shojo" with lyrics by Sada and backing vocals by Kato. In 2007, for Aming's 25th anniversary, she revived the duo and appeared on the 58th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen on December 31, performing "Matsu wa"; her solo activities continued in parallel.

In 2011 she joined Yamaha Music Communications and released the 25th-anniversary album Yuki in September. For her 30th anniversary in 2016 she released the all-time best album DO MY BEST II and the video collection encore memories, was named an Aichi music ambassador, and received the Okazaki Citizen Honor Award. In 2017 she was commissioned to write the theme song for the 70th National Tree Planting Festival.

Personal life

She married baseball player Hirotaka Ishii in January 1997 and had a daughter that September. After the 2002 best album DO MY BEST, she resumed concert activity and reunited Aming for one day at Shibuya Public Hall. She released TEAR DROPS in 2003 and began an essay column, "Happy o Sagashite." She divorced in 2003 and raised her daughter.

Illness and return

In 2019, as she prepared her first original album and tour in six years, she was diagnosed with acute leukemia in April and entered a long hiatus. The festival theme song "To-mo-ni" was released digitally on April 24, and the album fierté followed on May 22. After a cord blood transplant she reached complete remission and announced her discharge in September. She appeared on TV in February 2020 and returned to the stage on THE MUSIC DAY on July 3, 2021, after two years and two months. In September 2021 she marked her 35th anniversary with two best albums titled T's BEST, and in November appeared on Tetsuko's Room, reuniting with Tetsuko Kuroyanagi after 39 years. She held T's Garden in May 2022, and from January 2022 appeared in Aflac commercials. On April 7, 2026 she appeared live on NHK's Utakon.

Musical style

A folk-rooted singer-songwriter, Okamura is known for lyrics and melodies about the uncertainty of love, sorrow, and loneliness, alongside uplifting songs that capture the sensibilities of women of her generation. She has also written songs for other artists, including Tomoko Takabe, Yasuko Sawaguchi, and Natsumi Abe.
