About

Takashi Hosokawa

Overview

Takashi Hosokawa (細川たかし, born Takashi Hosokawa 細川貴志) was born on 15 June 1950 in Makkari, Abuta District, Hokkaido, and is a Japanese enka singer. After debuting in 1975 with "Kokoro Nokori," he quickly became one of the most popular enka and pop singers in Japan. He won the Japan Record Award three years in a row from 1982 to 1984 and appeared in NHK's Kōhaku Uta Gassen for 32 consecutive years, reaching 40 total appearances in 2021.

Career

Early years

Inspired by Hachiro Izawa's hit "Hokkai no Mangetsu," he decided to become a singer. He performed mainly in clubs in Sapporo's Susukino district, where his vocal presence earned him the nickname "Sapporo's Shin'ichi Mori." A Tokyo talent agency took notice and encouraged him to make a major debut. In 1974 he married a woman two years his senior, and promising to return if he did not succeed within a year, he moved to Tokyo alone. His wife died in November 2018; it was reported on 10 January 2024 that he had remarried in June 2023 to a non-celebrity woman he had been seeing since January 2020.

Debut

On 1 April 1975 he debuted with "Kokoro Nokori," which was originally to be titled "Watashi Baka yo." That year he won numerous rookie awards, including the Broadcast Music Newcomer Award at the 6th Japan Music Awards and the Best New Artist Award at the 17th Japan Record Awards. He made his first Kōhaku appearance at the 26th contest that year, serving as the opening performer for the White team. Around this time he met Michiya Mitsuhashi and received the name "Mitsuhashi Michiki."

Record Award triple crown

"Kita Sakaba," released on 1 March 1982, was his biggest hit in seven years, ranking fifth on Oricon's 1982 annual chart and winning the 24th Japan Record Award. On 21 February 1983 he released a cover of Naomi Chiaki's 1976 song "Yakiri no Watashi," which ranked second on Oricon's 1983 annual chart and won the 25th Japan Record Award, making him the first artist to win back-to-back grand prizes. With "Naniwabushi Da yo Jinsei wa," released on 21 August 1984, he won the Best Vocalist Award at the 26th Japan Record Awards, completing a triple crown. A monument honoring him was erected in Makkari in 1985, and a commemorative statue in 1994.

Kōhaku Uta Gassen

He declined NHK's offer in 2007 (58th contest), ending his streak at 32 consecutive appearances, which still ranks fifth in history. He returned in 2009 and continued through 2015. He declined the 67th contest in 2016, which would have been his 40th, saying generational change was needed. In 2021 he appeared in a special slot at the 72nd contest after six years away, reaching 40 total appearances.

Controversies

In 2007 it emerged that he had performed more than 50 times at concerts hosted by the investment company L&G, which was accused of fraud, and he withdrew from that year's Kōhaku. Lawyers for victims filed a damages suit in May 2008. In 2008 he was also found to have promoted a company selling costly devices, and in September 2009 his participation in a golf event with a crime syndicate boss led to a planned NHK appearance being shelved.

Recent activity

He has released singles nearly every year: "Hokkai Muhomatsu" (2016), "Enmusubi Iwai Uta / Jinsei Yume Shogi" (2017), "Wasshoi Nippon" and "Shin Oenka, Ikimasu" (2018), "Fuyuarashi" (2019), "2020 Iyomante no Yoru" (2020), "Fusetsu Yosare" (2021), "Noto no Hito" (2022), "Zansetsu Tsugaru" (2023), "Otokobune" (2024), "Tsugaru Nakase Bushi" (2025), and "Kamui Misaki" on 7 January 2026. A Night Tempo Showa Groove Mix of "Kita Sakaba" appeared in 2022, and he issued complete-collection albums in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 he took part in the One Hokkaido Project campaign song "Watashitachi no Michi," marking Hokkaido's 150th anniversary and supporting recovery from the 2018 earthquake. In January 2026 he published the book "Jinsei, Akaruku! Uta wa Nagaiki no Kusuri" (KADOKAWA).

Musical style

He works primarily in enka and kayōkyoku, known for a powerful vocal delivery. Many of his songs evoke the northern landscapes of Hokkaido and Tsugaru. His protégés include Konomi Mori, Saisei, and Aimi Tanaka.

Other activities

An accomplished skier since childhood, he holds a first-grade certification from the Ski Association of Japan, and in 2010 founded a nonprofit to nurture junior skiers and hold ski events. He is also a well-known Hello Kitty fan and appeared in the 1983 film "Otoko wa Tsurai yo."
