Career Overview

Early Career (1988-1990)

Wink was formed in 1987 when Sachiko Suzuki and Shoko Aida both entered a beauty contest held by the magazine Up to Boy, where Suzuki took 7th place and Aida took 9th. The following year, they debuted with the single "SUGAR BABY LOVE", a cover of a song by The Rubettes, which peaked at number 20 on the Oricon chart.

Peak Popularity (1989-1992)

In 1989, their single "Ai ga Tomaranai (Turn It into Love)" topped the Oricon chart and became a massive hit, winning the Grand Prix at the 22nd All-Japan Cable Broadcasting Awards. That same year, they also received the Japan Record Award for their hit "Samishii Nettaigyo (Lonely Tropical Fish)" and performed at NHK's Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

In the early 1990s, they showcased a more mature image with songs like "Sexy Music" and experimented with various musical styles. However, in March 1996, they were informed by their management of a suspension of activities, officially halting their career.

Reunion and Current Activities

Wink has reunited for special events on the 40th, 50th, and 30th anniversaries in 1998, 2008, and 2018 respectively, continuing to receive love from their fans. They occasionally make appearances on special broadcasts, performing their classic hits.

Musical Characteristics

Initially, Wink primarily released covers of Western pop songs, but later in their career, they began to produce original songs written by Japanese composers. Their music spans various genres, incorporating elements of Eurobeat and rock. Their emotionless performance style and unique fashion contributed to their popularity and influenced many artists that followed.

Wink is recognized as a successful example of a female duo in the history of Japanese popular music, with their distinctive idol image lingering in the memories of many fans.
