About
Yoko Oginome
Overview
Yoko Oginome (荻野目洋子, born December 10, 1968 in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture) is a Japanese singer, actress and voice actress who rose to fame as a pop idol in the mid-1980s. Her married name is Yoko Tsujino, and fans affectionately call her "Oginome-chan." Known for Eurobeat-flavored hits, she won the Japan Record Awards Gold Prize four years in a row from 1986 to 1989 and appeared on NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen five times. Her elder sister is actress Keiko Oginome, and her husband is professional tennis player Ryuso Tsujino; they have three daughters.
Career
Early years and Milk
She grew up moving around Chiba and Saitama and graduated from Horikoshi High School. Scouted in 1978 as a fourth grader after appearing on a TV show, she joined the three-girl elementary-school group Milk (as "Rumi") alongside Kazumi Obata and Kinuko Ohmori. They made their record debut in April 1979 and disbanded after two singles, the second being "Little Kiss" in August 1980.
Voice acting and solo debut
After auditioning for the film Shonben Rider, she was cast in 1983 as heroine Miyuki Wakamatsu in the anime Miyuki. Further roles followed, including Ai Ito in the anime film Baribari Densetsu (1986) and Planet-chan on Ugo Ugo Lhuga. She also sang in Namco's official Xevious video in January 1983. She made her solo debut on April 3, 1984 with "Mirai Kokai (Sailing)" on Victor. Success was slow at first, but "Beloved Caribbean" became a popular rooting song for teams such as the Seibu Lions, Fukuoka Daiei Hawks and Cerezo Osaka.
"Dancing Hero" and stardom
Her seventh single, "Dancing Hero (Eat You Up)" (November 21, 1985), a cover of Angie Gold's hi-NRG song, gave her first Oricon top 10 and became her biggest hit. Hits such as "Roppongi Junjoha" followed, and she appeared widely in commercials and variety shows. A bon-odori version of the song spread from Nagoya in 1986 to festivals in Aichi, Gifu and beyond. In 1988 she made the album Verge of Love with American black contemporary figure Narada Michael Walden as producer. Her acting career took off with starring roles in TBS's Early Spring Story (1986), Cheers to the Baby! (1987) and Fuji TV's Please Don't Worry! (1989), singing their theme songs, plus NHK dramas Rin Rin to (1990), Tokyo Kunitori Monogatari (1993) and Nagoya Okane Monogatari (1995). She also hosted the variety show Young Studio 101 and appeared on Super Jockey with Beat Takeshi.
Marriage, family and return
She married Ryuso Tsujino, a high-school classmate, in 2001 and had daughters in 2002, 2004 and 2006. After the 2001 single "LOVE", activity largely paused; she resumed singing by guesting on the compilation COVER LOVER vol.2 in October 2005 and released the 1980s Western-hit cover album Voice Nova in February 2006. The cover album Songs & Voice followed in November 2009.
30th anniversary and the "Bubble Dance" revival
From late 2013 she appeared frequently on music shows, and "Dancing Hero" topped digital download rankings. For her 30th anniversary she released the album Dear Pop Singer on August 20, 2014 (her first new original songs in about 15 years) and held her first solo concert in eight years at Akasaka BLITZ in October, released on Blu-ray and DVD in March 2015. In May 2016 she held a wedding ceremony after a performance of the stage play Katsura Yumi Monogatari. In 2017, the Osaka Prefectural Tomioka High School dance club's viral "Bubble Dance" to "Dancing Hero" triggered a revival hit; a special remix CD came out that December, and the song won a Special Award at the 59th Japan Record Awards together with the school. Later releases include the singles "Mushi no Tsubuyaki" (2020) and "Let's Shake" (2024) and the album Bug in a Dress. In June 2025 she announced her independence after about 40 years with Rising Production, continuing a business partnership with the agency.
Musical style
Oginome is best known for Eurobeat and hi-NRG-style songs such as "Dancing Hero" and "Coffee Rumba," yet she has never been confined to one style, producing a black contemporary album and cover albums. She studied folk songs with her father and her voice was praised as having "perfect vocalization."
