Early years

She started with kayokyoku, then moved on to Western artists such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. A member of the kendo club at junior high school, she says it built the foundation of her soulful vocal delivery. In 1994, at age 12, she entered the Columbia kayokyoku newcomer audition, singing a song by Maki Ohguro, and reached the national finals. She first declined an offer to debut, but accepted a renewed offer in 1997, spending about a year on vocal lessons and demo tapes while still in high school.

After graduating high school in March 2000 she moved to Tokyo; the singles "Aijō/can't hold me back" (No. 3) and "be alive" were major hits, and EXPANSION became a million-seller. The covers album KOYANAGI the COVERS PRODUCT 1 also sold well.
